Description:
Ray Phillips (1892-1975), lived alone on Manana Island for over 40 years and was one of the state of Maine's most celebrated hermits. Phillips attended the University of Maine and served in WWI before taking a job in New York City throughout the 1920s. Seemingly on a whim, he returned to Maine in 1931 where he spent a few years fishing on Monhegan Island and then bought one-sixth of Manana Island. Phillips would live alone on Manana Island in a driftwood home he built until his death in 1975. A documentary called "The Hermit of Manana" was made about Phillips in 2006.
